Study Abroad Program – May 18-28, 2025
Ireland has a fascinating and rich history which includes legal and judicial narratives that pre-date and lend perspective to contemporary systems. There are also narratives that are shared with communities in the United States- colonization, poverty, migration, transportation and conflict; these stories also offer new perspectives to consider when working in the area of justice.
This course explores Ireland’s justice system – from Gaelic Ireland to British Imperialism; Emigration and the ‘Troubles’. Learn how the country has grown from its past.
Discover the Irish justice system and how it has shaped the nation
The history of Ireland’s justice system can be seen across the island, and we’ll visit important locations such as Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin’s Criminal Courts Derry’s Walled City, and speak with Law & Criminal Justice Dept. experts from Atlantic Technological University.
Experience a new culture
Immerse yourself in Irish culture; the food, the people, the music and the landscapes. We’ll visit cities and rural towns, eat at Irish restaurants, and meet people from across the island. Learn about the country’s history, with visits to the Cavan Burren Park, The Bogside Murals and Donegal Castle.

Whether it’s beaches or mountains, cities or villages, Ireland has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Hike the beautiful Sliabh Liag mountain, hear authentic Irish music, and learn to surf at one of Europe’s top beaches,

From the hustle of Tokyo to the serene gardens of Nikko, with its temples and shrines, earn college credit while you immerse yourself in the culture of Japan.
All students are welcome to participate in Global Engagement experiences.
Highlights include:
- Pre-Travel Online Preparation Course on the Narratives of Ireland
- Field trips include visits to the Criminal Courts, Correctional Facilities, Police Stations and Probation Offices.
- A cultural immersion in Ireland, including time in Dublin City, and County Donegal, the most scenic and magical part of the Wild Atlantic Way
- Visit historic landmarks such as Castles, Viking Settlements and Ancient Forts, as well as time for cultural tours
- Enjoy a visit to Dublin’s Kilmainham Gaol, Ireland’s most famous monument to the 1916 Rising
- Opportunities to sample fabulous food at local restaurants, hear Irish traditional music, and see Irish movies and art.
